Berlin sits at UTC+1 in January. At 10:00 local time, a call from New York arrives at 04:00 (UTC-5) and one from Tokyo at 18:00 (UTC+9). Same wall clock, three offsets. Every inhabited place on Earth slots into one of 38 standard offsets, stretching from UTC-12 to UTC+14.
Every UTC offset in use
A place at UTC+3 runs three hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. A place at UTC-5 runs five hours behind. The table below lists every offset currently recognised by the IANA time zone database.

Standard offsets vs daylight offsets
A single location can carry two UTC offsets in the same year. London uses UTC+0 in winter (GMT) and UTC+1 in summer (BST). The table above shows the standard (winter) offset for each location. When a place observes Daylight Saving Time Around the World, its offset shifts forward by one hour during summer months.
The offset you need depends on the date. A meeting with colleagues in Santiago works at UTC-3 in July (Chile winter) but at UTC-4 in January (Chile summer, because southern hemisphere DST runs opposite to the northern hemisphere). Always check the date before converting.
Fractional offsets explained
Not every offset is a whole hour. Eleven fractional offsets exist, five in regular use:
- UTC-09:30 (Marquesas)
- UTC-03:30 (Newfoundland)
- UTC+03:30 (Iran)
- UTC+04:30 (Afghanistan)
- UTC+05:30 (India)
- UTC+05:45 (Nepal)
- UTC+06:30 (Myanmar, Cocos Islands)
- UTC+08:45 (Eucla, unofficial)
- UTC+09:30 (Central Australia, Lord Howe)
- UTC+10:30 (Lord Howe summer)
- UTC+12:45 (Chatham)
These offsets exist because some countries chose a meridian that falls between the 15-degree bands. Read the Half-Hour and Quarter-Hour Time Zones Explained for the full story.
How to find a current UTC offset
A UTC offset changes with DST. In October 2026, the northern hemisphere shifts back to standard time. The next change comes on 2 November 2026, when the US and Canada move from daylight time to standard time, shifting their offsets back by one hour.
For a past or future date, use the interactive tool below the table.
Using offsets for time conversion
To convert between two locations, add or subtract the difference between their UTC offsets. If Paris is at UTC+2 (June) and New York is at UTC-4 (June), the difference is 6 hours. When it is 14:00 in Paris, it is 08:00 in New York.
